Moose hunting has been around for centuries. In the early days, moose hunting was used as a way to get food to eat for meals. Now moose hunting is used as an outlet for recreation and to get rid of overpopulating moose. There are many different places that provide moose hunting.
Some of the top places for hunting moose are found north in Canada and Alaska.
Canada moose hunting is not a sport, but an obsession. Some of the most popular places for Canada moose hunting can be found in Manitoba and Alberta. Moose hunting trips in British Columbia usually occur during peak moose hunting season from August to November. Canada is a very popular place for hunting moose because of all the marshes and forests that the moose like to inhabit. They are good swimmers and can run fast even in muddy waters because of their hooves. It's important for hunters to be aware that although moose may be large, they are also fast.
Hunting moose in Canada requires wildlife certifications. Both non residents and residents will pay $22.85 for the wildlife certification. A certification is simply the Canadian term for a license. Therefore, no tests are required to obtain it. A bow hunting permit costs $7 for residents and $14 for non residents.
A five-day hunt usually costs $3,900 while a six-day hunt costs $4,500. Alberta moose hunting trips usually cost between $4,300 to $5,300, depending on the duration of the hunting trip. Whats usually included in a hunting trip is 5 days of hunting, lodging, sometimes tags for the animals, and a guide. Again, it depends on who the trip is made through. There are hundreds of online sites dedicated to moose hunting trips in Canada.
Another popular location to retreat to for moose hunting is Alaska. Hunters are also required to obtain a license, game tags, and a trapping license to hunt in Alaska. The moose population in Alaska is between 9,000-12,000 moose. Hunters usually rely on bows to kill the moose in Alaksa.
Moose hunting in Alaska is often more expensive than Canada because hunters have to fly in to the actual moose hunting site. Alaska moose hunting trips usually require a fly in fee and license fee. For an Alaska moose hunting trip the cost is $10,700, with a fly in fee of $950. Another fee is included for license and tag fees. Nonresident U.S. citizens will have to pay $400 and non-U.S. citizens will have to pay $500. Also, much of Alaska is still untamed, making moose hunting a little trickier to enjoy than in Canada.
While there are many different places for hunters to enjoy hunting moose, there are only two ways to hunt moose: bow hunting and gun hunting. Many hunters prefer bow hunting moose because of the difficulty involved and the sense of accomplishment it provides. It takes more skill, accuracy, and patience to hunt with a bow as opposed to a gun. It is recommended that hunters practice before attempting to hunt with a bow. In most every state there is a specific bow hunting license that is required. Most of these licenses can be obtained via online form on the state's hunting website.
Gun hunting moose also requires practice and patience. It is recommended that hunters practice at a firing range or out in the backyard away from kids and animals. Rifles are the most popular gun to use, but some hunters prefer the rush of killing a large animal by using a small hand gun. Again, if any questions come up, just ask. Its better to know than to hurt someone because the answer is unknown. Also, know the animals that are being hunted and they'll react to a gun shot. Lastly, make the shot count.
Over the years moose hunting will only become more popular. Locations like Alberta, Alaska, and Canada will only increase in popularity as well. Whether its bow hunting moose or gun hunting moose, knowing all the facts beforehand is the best way to make for a good trip.
