There is no doubt that a large section of the American population loves to hunt. Deer hunting is among the most popular wildlife sport in the United States. In fact, it's a billion dollar a year industry. Deer hunting is such a popular activity that it has spawned its own hunting traditions and culture.
The most popular species of deer in the U.S. is the whitetail deer. Found throughout the Central and Eastern United States, whitetail deer number around 30 million in these areas alone. The large population makes it easier for the government to issue whitetail deer hunting licenses, and make them a good and plentiful target for hunters of all skill levels.
There are hundreds of books and websites for deer hunting tips. Some examples include what kinds of guns to use, sounds and scents that attract deer, how to aim more accurately, and what to do once a deer is shot. With such a large consumer base, the deer hunting community is always willing exchange tips and advice with fellow hunters.
A source of some debate among hunters is deer hunting rifles. Everybody has their own preference on which hunting rifles work best in the field. Things to consider include range, accuracy, ammunition, whether to use bolt action or older powder style rifles, and weight, especially if the hunters are going to be carrying their hunting rifles on a long stakeout. Selecting the right deer hunting rifles for a particular hunter is less an exact science and more of a feeling out process. As a result, heavy research is suggested.
But what about when the hunter isn't out in his or her stand? Well, there's plenty of deer hunting fun to be had at home. While the public misconception is that hunters are often humorless rednecks, nothing could be further from the truth. Deer hunting jokes have spawned dozens of books. In addition, websites are set up to allow enthusiasts to share their favorite deer hunting jokes, which provide a much needed bit of levity in an unusually brutal sport.
Also popular within the community are deer hunting songs. Today's hunting songs tend to skew more to the humorous side to amuse hunters during long stints of inactivity; however, the popularity of the songs date back to the Native American, who used songs to relay tales of great hunts or as part of hunting rituals.
For those of a less literary persuasion, there are a number of deer hunting games on the market to sate their needs during the off seasons. A popular example is Cabella's Big Game Hunt, which tries to accurately capture the nuances of the sport for the avid deer hunter. Additionally, there are more humorous takes on the sport, including one where gamers impersonate the deer hunting the hunters. While hunting games have met, at times, with mixed reviews on their fun and realism, with a little bit of research interested hunters will surely find one or two games to entertain them.
Deer hunting, as a sport, is supposed to be about fun and camaraderie as much as the hunt itself. Sharing tips, songs, jokes, and games helps build a strong community of associates to share in the sport. So maybe the next time hunters are out on the prowl trying to bag a whitetail, they'll know they're part of more than just a hunt, but a whole culture of its own.
